What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed for some reason. The sciatic nerve runs from the spinal cord down through the buttocks and into the legs and when pressure is put on it, causes the characteristic lower back and leg pain of sciatica. Sciatica itself is actually a symptom--whatever is causing the nerve compression is the underlying issue.

What are The Symptoms of Sciatica?

Sciatica usually causes back, buttock, and leg pain. This pain may be dull, sharp, burning, or electric. It is most common for the pain to radiate down one leg, but it may sometimes occur in both legs. Most people experience pain mainly in the buttocks, but in some cases, pain from sciatic nerve compression may radiate down the leg all the way to the foot. Numbness and tingling are also possible symptoms of sciatica. Pain may be mild to severe, and occasional, frequent, or constant.

What Causes Sciatica?

There are a number of common causes of sciatica pain:

  • Muscle injury or tension placing pressure on the nerve
  • Slipped or herniated discs
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Misalignments of the spine
  • Exterior pressure, such as habitually sitting on your wallet

How is Sciatica Diagnosed?

In order to diagnose sciatica, our chiropractor will discuss your symptoms and problems with you before performing a hands-on exam. Because sciatica is a symptom of an underlying issue, it is essential to diagnose the problem correctly. Often, additional tests such as x-rays or MRIs are required in order to determine what the root of the problem is.

How Can a Chiropractor Treat Sciatica?

There are a number of tools that a chiropractor can use to treat sciatica, depending on the underlying cause. Vertebral misalignments are treated through spinal decompression and other chiropractic manipulation. Treatment of muscle injuries that may be causing the symptoms of sciatica can include ice and heat therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises, and massage.

All of our treatment plans are customized to meet your individual needs. Most treatments are used in combination with at least one other treatment in order to ensure that you receive the maximum benefit.
