Cervical Lordosis - Spine, Neck Health, and Headaches

The neck and spine is a complex network of nerves, muscles, and bones that, all things considered, is extremely resilient. When issues occur, however, they can manifest themselves in significant pain and discomfort. One key factor is often creating neck pain or stiffness is a loss of normal cervical lordosis.

What is Cervical Lordosis?

Cervical lordosis is the natural curve that is formed by your neck vertebrae. This curve, when healthy, forms a wide “C” shape with the arched part of the “C” facing toward the front of your body. It is easy to understand the importance of a healthy cervical lordosis, especially when you consider that this of the part of your spine that supports the head while also allowing it to move in such a wide range of motions throughout your life. Through repetitive stress or injuries over the course of time, however, this natural “C” shape can deteriorate and straighten. In some cases, the desired “C” shape can actually reverse. This can cause significant problems and is called reversed cervical lordosis.

Headaches and Other Problems Associated with Reversed Cervical Lordosis

It can be important to keep in mind that to some degree, the curvature of the neck is always in flux. When reversed cervical lordosis occurs due to injury, bad posture, degeneration or repetitive stress, then neck pain, headaches, and stiffness may occur. Since reversed cervical lordosis can take years to develop, pain or stiffness may initially be minor.

Muscle spasms in the neck, if severe enough, can also negatively affect the curvature of the neck.
