Fibrocystic breast condition is the most common cause of "lumpy breasts" in women. The condition primarily affects women between the ages of 30 and 50 and tends to become less of a problem after menopause. The abbreviation is FCC (an acronym derived from FibroCystic breast Condition). 1 in 5 women aged 21 to 50 suffer from painful or uncomfortable breasts, particularly around the menstrual cycle, and 20% of these are diagnosed with FCC.
Recent research indicates that women with fibrocystic breast disease have a higher risk of breast cancer than the general population. Among breast cancer patients with a family history of breast cancer, fibrocystic breast condition tends to be more prevalent in those with early diagnoses (20 to 44 years).
