Myofascial Massage (Graston Technique)

Female holding shoulder in pain If you struggle with chronic pain and tightness throughout your body, you may suffer from a problem known as myofascial pain syndrome. This condition can send pain and other unwelcome sensation to various parts of your body while also limiting your range of motion. Fortunately, you can get all-natural relief through the combination of chiropractic care and a treatment modality called myofascial massage at Sandpiper Family Chiropractic.

Benefits of Myofascial Massage

In addition to muscles, tendons, and ligaments, your body contains a type of connective tissue known as fascia. The fascia covers these other tissues and weaves their way through them like a membranous web. This arrangement means that when fascia develops problems, the underlying tissues often suffer the effects.

Myofascial pain syndrome may stem from issues such as poor posture or uncorrect spinal alignment errors that place your tissue under constant, unnatural stress. The fascia may tighten up, limiting muscle motion painfully. Your tissues may also develop painful knots called trigger points. These knots of tight tissue can pinch nerves, sending referred pain to remote areas such as the extremities.

Myofascial massage offers a drug-free, non-invasive technique for relaxing these areas of tightness. In this form of massage, your practitioner feels for knots or hard spots that need breaking up. Targeted manipulation of these areas can force the tissue to unclench, freeing your body to work as it should and easing referred pain symptoms.

Combining Chiropractic Care With Myofascial Massage

Chiropractic care and myofascial massage work hand in hand to provide lasting relief. Dr. Richard Kupcho makes adjustments and corrects any alignment problems that make you more vulnerable to myofascial tightness and pain. Between chiropractic adjustment sessions, ongoing myofascial massage sessions can keep your tissues from tightening up again.

This incremental approach not only helps you maintain optimal comfort and mobility; it also helps to preserve the corrections made by Dr. Kucpho, allowing you to get the greatest possible benefit from your adjustments. We can even show you how to self-administer simple kinds of myofascial release using a foam roller or other tools to help you keep your tissues limber.

Graston Technique

Graston Technique effectively breaks down scar tissue and reduces inflammation that causes pain and restricted mobility.

Used by physical and occupational therapists, hand therapists, chiropractors, and athletic trainers, the stainless steel instruments comb over and “catch” on fibrotic tissue, which immediately identifies areas of restriction. The instruments enable clinicians to treat soft tissue lesions with the depth, pressure, and specificity necessary to affect the condition at the site of the pain, as well as following the kinetic chain to find and treat the cause. Once the tissue dysfunction has been identified, the instruments break up the scar tissue so it can be absorbed by the body.

By incorporating stretching, strengthening, and ice in the treatment and rehab process, clinicians can rebuild the soft tissue injury into healthy functioning tissue.

GT instruments are not meant to replace a clinician’s hands, but to complement them in a manner not possible with other modalities or soft tissue approaches.

Graston Technique is clinically proven to achieve quicker and better outcomes in treating:

  • Achilles Tendinosis/itis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Cervical Sprain/Strain (Neck Pain)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Lateral Epicondylosis/itis (Tennis Elbow)
  • Lumbar Sprain/Strain (Back Pain)
  • Medial Epicondylosis/itis (Golfer’s Elbow)
  • Patellofemoral Disorders (Knee Pain)
  • Plantar Fasciitis (Foot Pain)
  • Rotator Cuff Tendinosis/itis (Shoulder Pain)
  • Scar Tissue
  • Shin Splints
  • Trigger Finger
  • Women’s Health (Post-Mastectomy and Caesarean Scarring)

Historically, the Graston Technique has had positive outcomes in 75-90% of all conditions treated. It is equally effective in restoring function to acute and chronic injuries, and pre- and postsurgical patients.
