What Is Active Therapeutic Movement?

Active Therapeutic Movement, or ATM as it is sometimes called, is a type of specially designed corrective exercise that can be used to help patients with pain or mobility issues. When the body is experiencing pain, there is a hesitation to move a lot. This decrease in activity complicates the pain and can sometimes intensify it. It can be difficult to push yourself to keep moving when you are hurting.

ATM is a method of gently building back your mobility so that your body can find a balance between resting and activity. Sedentary lifestyles intensify pain disorders and complicate recovery from injuries and surgery.

Who Needs ATM?

ATM is helpful for people who struggle to get moving. You may be struggling with one of the following conditions:

  • Injury- If you have been injured in an auto accident, sporting accident or because of some other reason, your ultimate recovery will be dependent on how much you get your body back into regular activity. If this is feeling difficult for you, ATM with a trained professional can help.
  • Surgery- Surgery is a traumatic experience for the body. If you do not push yourself to get active again following your surgery, it can greatly complicate your long-term health and recovery.
  • Chronic pain- Chronic pain can be a result of conditions such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, and other problems. Finding ways to gently stay active can decrease your pain levels and help you obtain a new level of health.

What to Expect

When you visit a chiropractor on our team, you will be evaluated for your overall health and pain levels. Your current level of activity and endurance will be taken into consideration when your ATM treatment plan is developed. You can always adjust your treatment plan to meet your needs as well.
