Dust Mites and Gut Function

A study published in the December 8, 2015 edition of Gut found that house dust mites affect the permeability and function of the gut. Previous research found that allergen from Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p1), the dust mite, is found in the the rodent gut. This study found that it is also found in the human gut. In the human gut it is associated with increased permeability (leaky gut), as well as an increase in inflammatory markers. The effects were increased in people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It seems that keeping your house as free from dust as possible could help the function of your gut.
