A study appearing online September 28, 2015 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology debunks some nutrition myths. With the return of the high protein/high fat diet in the form of the Paleo diet, many people think cutting out carbs, including whole grains, and consuming as much protein in the form of animal products is a healthier option. While many people lose weight on such a regime, it is not a healthy diet. The researchers found that saturated fat and refined carbohydrates both increase risk for heart disease. Back in the 70s and 80s when people were replacing saturated fat with carbohydrates, they go mainly for the refined carbohydrates. This increased the risk for diabetes and other blood sugar issues, along with increasing the risk for heart disease. People who replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats (vegetable oils such as olive oil and nuts) and the fats found in cold water fish, along with whole grains lower their heart disease risk.
