Bone Health and Diabetes

The July 13 online edition of Bone included the study, "Bone's Responses to Mechanical Loading Are Impaired in Type 1 Diabetes." Osteocytes are the cells that build bone. They are sensitive to sugar in the blood. Studying mice, the researchers found that midli diabetic mice were still able to build bone in response to exercise. Severely diabetic mice were not. The bottom line here is that diabetics need to keep their blood sugar controlled in order to build bone in response to exercise.
