Atrial Fibrillation and Fitness

To read moreA study published in the August 2015 edition of The Journal of the American College of Cardiology looked at trail fibrillation in obese and overweight patients. While weight loss has been shown to help in the long-term for overweight individuals with arrhythmia, the effect of cardiorespiratory fitness compared to weight loss was not known. This study followed 825 patients with a BMI over 27 (or at least overweight) for 4 years. 17% of those who were the least fit had no more arrhythmias, whereas 76% in the adequate group and 84% in the high fitness group had no more arrhythmias. If a person improved in fitness there was a further risk reduction. These changes happened regardless of weight loss, although weight loss helped and further reduced the risk for arrhythmias.
