While weight loss has been shown to help in the long-term for overweight individuals with arrhythmia, the effect of cardiorespiratory fitness compared to weight loss was not known. This study followed 825 patients with a BMI over 27 (or at least overweight) for 4 years. 17% of those who were the least fit had no more arrhythmias, whereas 76% in the adequate group and 84% in the high fitness group had no more arrhythmias. If a person improved in fitness there was a further risk reduction. These changes happened regardless of weight loss, although weight loss helped and further reduced the risk for arrhythmias.
