An FDA panel recently recommended stronger labelling on a class of drugs known as fluoroquinolones. Fluoroquinolones include ciprofloxacin (“cipro”), levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, ofloxacin, and gemifloxacin. Serious adverse events from these drugs include tendinitis, tendon rupture, changes to electrical properties of the heart, and peripheral neuropathy among others. The panel found that these drugs are not effective and should not be given to those with acute bacterial sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis in those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or for uncomplicated urinary tract infection.
