A systematic review and meta-analysis was recently published the the journal Diabetologia looking at the effect that various types of exercise have on type 2 diabetes. Their research suggests that combined aerobic and resistance training are optimal for controlling blood sugar and blood lipid profiles. The combined exercise was best at reducing HbA1c, fasting glucose, diastolic blood pressure, and bodyweight, while improving HDL and blood lipid profiles in general.
Combined exercise could be 30 minutes of cycling or running or brisk walking followed by 20 minutes of weight training.
