Children, Sleep, and Fish Oil

A randomized placebo-controlled study by the University of Oxford found that higher blood levels of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA was associated with better sleep in children. The study's overall aim was to examine children with reading problems. Poor sleep can lead to learning difficulties. 362 children were supplemented with an algae source of 600 mg of DHA nightly for 16 weeks. The other children were given soy or corn oil, omega-6 oils, as a placebo. Those receiving the DHA oil at night had, on average, one hour more of good sleep. Better sleep includes less bedtime resistance and sleep disturbances. DHA is the main fatty acid found in the brain and is necessary for melatonin production.

Functional medicine practitioners are able to help you determine whether or not your child could benefit from such supplementation.
