A long term Finnish study was published recently in Diabetes Care. 2,212 men between 42 and 60 years of age at the onset of the study in 1984-1989 were followed on an average for 19.3 years. At the beginning of the study their serum (blood) omega-3 fatty acid concentration was measured. This value reflects both fish consumption and fish oil consumption. This with the highest levels of serum omega-3 fatty acids had a 33% lower risk of getting diabetes than those in the lowest concentration. As with all such studies, I wonder if those eating more fish tended to eat a healthier diet anyway.
