Sugars and Mortality

A recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition looked at the association between dietary sugar intake and mortality in men and women. An increase in all cause mortality in women was associated with total sugar, total fructose and added fructose intake in beverages. An increase in all cause mortality in men was only associated with total fructose. These relationships were only true for sugars in beverages. In sugars found in foods, there was a small trend towards a decrease in all cause mortality in men with increased added sugars, sucrose, and added sucrose. The bottom line is that sweetened beverages are not good for men and women. Most people will consume sweetened beverages in the form of sodas.
