Daily Walking and Aging

A study published in Frontiers of Public Health in April 2013 found that walking daily was associated with a decrease in mortality among elderly people in the Iowa 65+ Rural Health Study. 1,134 people who exercised daily by walking and 1,583 people who did not exercise daily by walking were followed for 8 years. The risk for death was highest in the non-walking group who had cancer. Interestingly, the group who had a stroke but walked anyway had a lower risk of death than the non-walking stroke group. After 65 many people have various ailments, so people who didn't walk might have been too sick to walk and also more likely to die. I guess the bottom line is, that if you're able to walk, regardless of your health, you'll be better off!
