Estrogen Replacement and Cardiovascular Disease

The September 30, 2013 edition of JAMA Internal Medicine reports that estradiol is safer than conjugated equine estrogen (found in Premarin) by causing fewer cardiovascular events. The risk of having a myocardial infarction and venous thromboembolism was higher in the equine estrogen group. The risk for ischemic stroke was similar in both groups. As a side note, estradiol is considerably less expensive than conjugated equine estrogen.
