What Is a Tension Headache?

A tension headache is usually an ongoing ache behind the eyes or around the head. Usually, it’s a dull ache that comes on slowly, but some people do have sharp, sudden pains at times. Unlike migraines, they don’t typically come with sensitivity to light or nausea. However, some people have been nauseous with tension headaches.

There are two different types of tension headaches: episodic and chronic. Both produce the same pain and symptoms. However, episodic tension headaches typically only come on 14 days or less per month. Chronic tension headaches occur at least 15 days each month.

Causes of Tension Headaches

In short, tension headaches are the result of the neck and even scalp muscles becoming tense. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to:

  • Mental stress, as this can cause you to tense up your shoulders and neck
  • Misalignment, which puts undue pressure on the muscles
  • Poor posture
  • Fatigue
  • Poor sleep positions

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Your chiropractor has various methods to help relieve tension headaches long term. The following are a few examples, though your specific tension headache treatment will depend on your needs.

Adjustments

Adjustments to the spinal column are integral for relieving tension headaches. They address any misalignment issues that might be causing unnecessary tension in your neck. They also help restore your range of motion, allowing you to further stretch your neck and move it as life requires.

Chiropractic Massage

Chiropractic massage is designed to address tension, inflammation, and injuries in the soft tissues. Regardless of whether your neck tension is the cause of the pain or a byproduct of misalignment, chiropractic massage can eradicate it.

Corrective Exercises

Corrective exercises are effective for a variety of conditions. In the case of tension headaches, targeted exercises can help improve your posture, undo any damage to the soft tissues, and prevent future headaches.

Addressing Triggers

Your chiropractor will also help you determine any triggers and find a way to avoid them. This could be anything from dietary changes and stress management to improving your work environment and sleep habits.
