Chiropractic Care

A chiropractor’s education is thorough and demanding. Before entering a collegiate school of chiropractic, students must complete 2-4 years of undergraduate work. During this time, there is an emphasis on basic sciences including organic chemistry, general chemistry, physics, biology, and psychology.

After completing the undergraduate requirements, students go on to attend a chiropractic college where they study 4-5 years. Academic course work includes an in-depth study of anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, radiology, biomechanics, spinal adjustive techniques, and a variety of other health-related areas.

Besides studying and attending classes, chiropractic students must complete a series of national board examinations. In addition, students must complete several hundred hours of internship work. Upon graduation and passing all national board examinations, students must take a state board exam in the state they wish to practice chiropractic. Once licensed, most states require Doctors of Chiropractic to attend annual seminars in order to maintain a high level of competency and keep technical skills sharp and as current as possible.

Having said that, at Hamby Chiropractic & Wellness in Rincon, Georgia we provide advanced spinal correction and chiropractic adjustments utilizing "state of the art" chiropractic techniques. Never in the history of chiropractic care have chiropractors been able to provide the level of help and expertise that is available today. Many of the newest chiropractic techniques are actually safer, more comfortable, and more effective than ever before. As local chiropractors who care about utilizing the most advanced chiropractic techniques, our Rincon chiropractors have years of training, expertise, and experience in helping patients get relief from back pain, neck pain, headaches, muscular tightness, and other related conditions originating from the spine. Chiropractic care under a trained professional, such as our chiropractors, can even be used to prevent injuries and help you achieve total health and wellness.

The adjustment is a safe and natural procedure used by Doctors of Chiropractic to restore and improve health. The art and science behind the adjustment takes years of study and practice. Chiropractors are the only highly-trained health care specialists that perform adjustments.

Five Types of Chiropractic Adjustment

1.) Gonstead Technique

This hands-on technique often involves adjusting the low back or pelvis as the patient lies on their side. Chiropractors use it to realign joints, reduce pain and stiffness, and increase mobility.

2.) Activator Technique

A handheld adjusting instrument delivers a gentle impulse into the vertebral segments of the spine, or the extremities. The force feels like a light thumping sensation when used to treat everything from low back pain to certain types of headaches, like migraines.

3.) Flexion Distraction

Also called Cox Technique or decompression manipulation, it’s used in more than half of all chiropractic clinics, and a method of choice when treating disc herniations, facet joint pain, scoliosis and other conditions.

4.) Thompson/Drop Table Technique

This involves a specially adapted table with padded platforms designed to drop a fraction of an inch when the chiropractor applies a quick thrust to make an adjustment. The subtle dropping motion, which patients feel as vibration, makes it very comfortable for most patients.

5.) Diversified Technique

Also employed to adjust the spine and extremities, this feels similar to the Gonstead technique. It’s considered the most widely used technique involving very precise hands-on thrusts aimed at restoring proper movement and alignment to the spine.

Keep in mind that there are hundreds of adjustment techniques used around the world by Doctors of Chiropractic. Oftentimes, a chiropractor will use one or more technique depending on the issue and patient. Moreover the overall goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to locate and remove subluxations.

A subluxation is the term given to a vertebra that is misaligned in the spinal column. This distortion causes stress on the body. Subluxations can be caused by physical, chemical, and emotional activity.

Physical causes are things such as acute trauma to the body, repetitive motions affecting the spine, bad postural habits, improper workstation habits and design, and weak or imbalanced spinal musculature.

Chemical causes are things like poor dietary and nutritional practices, drug and alcohol use and abuse, and the ingestion of chemical toxins in the foods we eat, air we breath, and water we drink.

Emotional causes are stress.

Subluxations can be corrected with a variety of techniques, but the primary one utilized by chiropractors is the spinal adjustment.

Signs & Symptoms of a Subluxation:

  • neck pain, tenderness, soreness and stiffness
  • back pain, tenderness, soreness and stiffness
  • headaches
  • dizziness or balance problems
  • spinal muscle spasm, tightness or weakness
  • reduced spinal mobility
  • pain, numbness or tingling in the extremities
  • joint pain and stiffness
  • low energy
  • poor overall state of health
  • poor tissue healing

Corrective Exercises

At Hamby Chiropractic & Wellness, in Rincon we teach our patients how to perform special "blueprint" exercises, which can help strengthen and correct the irregularities in their bodies that may be causing pain. Many of these corrective exercises can actually be performed in the comfort of your own home to help improve the effectiveness of your chiropractic care and spinal correction plan. In addition to skeletal misalignment, you may be experiencing pain that is caused by muscles and connective tissues, which are out of their proper place. In each case, targeted corrective exercises and stretches from Dr. Matthew Hamby will help you feel good while also helping your body achieve balance and health.

Lifestyle Counseling

Many of our patients come to see Dr. Matthew Hamby to address a specific pain symptom such as back pain, neck pain or headaches. The goal of including lifestyle advice with a chiropractic care plan is to help each and every patient achieve the happy lifestyle they deserve. We recognize that every single one of our patients is a whole person, and we use our expertise to help them reach total health and wellness.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy does more than make you feel good, it can actually help your body achieve balance and health. Each massage therapy plan is tailored to meet the patient's unique pain condition or injury. The benefits of massage therapy may include the increase of blood circulation, a localized reduction in swelling, and the relaxation of muscles. Massage has been known to relieve muscle pain and spasms, increase a patient's range of motion, while also aiding in a patient's recovery. Some investigative studies have even indicated that a single session of massage may help boost your immune system!
