Do Chiropractors have Scientific Research?

There is plenty of research out there to support the effects of a chiropractic treatment.

There is an article by Markham Heid dated April 12, 2017 entitled Are Chiropractors Legitimate?

Here are some of the data he supplied and my thoughts. I can't believe there is still a debate on whether chiropractic is legitimate in 2017 when this treatment has been going on since 1895.

The reason most people don't "believe" in chiropractic (no not a religion), is because of scientific data. Or should I say "lack of scientific data", so I wanted to address this.

Chiropractors are usually small businesses with low budgets. We don't have the facilities or funds which enable us to do large studies like the western medicine doctors and facilities. Also, based on what we do, it is hard to have a double blind study.  An adjustment has to be performed in order to get a result.  Most data we are recording are Case Studies.

The good news is that in New Zealand, there are scientific studies by Heidi Haavik that are constantly being done to show how the chiropractic adjustment effects brain function and executive function.  The research is out there, you just gotta know where to look.

Most people know us for back and neck relief and because of all of the advertising stating how that is all that we do we don't see large amounts of people for other ailments necessarily. Chiropractors on average probably see about 8% of the population which makes it hard to have large amounts of people coming in with other problems other than neck and back pain.

When we send off our case studies we get a lot of push back because "well, there is not enough data to show if this is really true" responses. We have been successfully treating people for spinal issues and find in most cases other problems they have been having such as digestion, allergies, asthma, high blood pressure and many other issues have declined in our treatment or have subsided.

Patients who are in tune with their body figure this out and tell others but it is word of mouth and not a scientific study. Word has gotten around and slowly people are figuring out that the body can heal without getting cut open or staying on pharmaceuticals in most cases.

Again, for those of you that want to see what is happening in Chiropractic, there is data out there. You have to really look for it. For instance, the Haavik Institute in New Zealand has various studies and has a research facility dedicated to chiropractic.

Our treatments enhance and help keep the Autonomic Nervous System working at its best.  This is the system that controls all of our organs, tissues, glands. This is stated in every medical book you purchase not just chiropractic. The reason why we work with the spine is because it houses the spinal cord which sends signals up and down to the brain and extremities.

Adjustments highly affect the alignment and function of the spine. So, if the spine is not moving properly doesn't it make sense that these areas are going to be disturbed? Okay then when they are not disturbed they should (unless there is something pathological) work at their best? Makes sense to me but if there isn't enough scientific data out there, no one will believe it.

There is an article where it states: “The benefits of chiropractic for acute low back pain have been pretty widely accepted for years now within the medical community,” says Dr. Ronald Glick, assistant professor of psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and coauthor of several of Schneider’s research papers.

“When I started in practice over 30 years ago, people would look askance at a physician who recommended chiropractic, but that’s not the case anymore,” he adds

That is great but he only recommends chiropractic if it is for low back or neck pain. Our treatments show results in any other areas, but when it is reported, it is seen as a fluke or due to something else not remotely correlated to chiropractic.  Unfortunately, most of the medical community will not believe this to be a result of our care.

Fidget Spinners states: “The controversy comes in when chiropractors make claims about treating non-musculoskeletal conditions”—claims he says have little to no basis in science. - Chiropractic philosophy states that we are relieving subluxations (irregular joint position) freeing up the body to heal on its own.

We don't "treat" specific ailments, we treat the whole body in search for areas of malfunction that could be stressing the symptomatic area and then treat those areas. The symptoms subsides because the stress is now taken care of and the body has healed. Along the way during treatments other physical problems may decline as a result of the Autonomic Nervous System repairing itself. Again, the ANS connects to all organs, tissues and glands in the body. Not made up or "believed", Fact, as stated in every medical textbook.

"This “failure to present a unified front” is the biggest problem facing chiropractors today, says Dr. Scott Haldeman, a neurologist and chiropractor who teaches at both UCLA and UC Irvine. “You could walk into a chiropractor’s office and find someone who is a pure back-and-neck-pain guy—a guy who has embraced the scientific research—or someone who says he can cure all things and provide general wellness,” Haldeman explains".

-Yes, that is true but isn't also true of most medical professionals, Acupuncturists etc.? There is so much out there about studies and what the aim is of the study and who is funding such studies.  If a drug company wants its drug to be legitimized so it can be sold, the research is going to be done to support the aim of the funder.

Chiropractic is safe, effective and helps the body re-energize and heal.  It relieve stress and gets the communication of the nerves back to normal all while allowing the body to move better.  Contact us today to become the YOU that you want to be.  We are located in San Carlos, CA and San Francisco, CA.
