Pick's Disease is a neurodegenerative disease that affects neurons. The nerves just plain stop working. As brain cells start to fail, shrink or wither, the areas those neurons go to have now lost function leading to long term chronic biological issues.
This Syndrome consists of a deterioration of the frontal lobe and temporal lobes of the brain. It is also known as Pick's Disease.
There are 2 types of Picks' Disease:
(1) Behavioral
(2) Difficulty with the language areas of the brain.
Behavioral Symptoms are:
Difficulty with Language Pick's Disease have issues with spatial skills and but memory may remain intact.
Studies have shown a high genetic component. FTD runs in families. Treatment No treatment has been shown to slow the progression of this Syndrome.
In some cases, anti-depressants have been shown to improve some symptoms. If given a drug, please read and analyze the side effects.
The prognosis unfortunately is poor. This disease progresses quickly and once the brain neurons have died, they don't grow back. Life expectancy is from less than 2 years in some individuals to more than 10 years in others.
Please be patient with people that have Pick's Disease. They are doing the best they can. Love and touch could be just what they need on top of normal everyday activities.
