What are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

You may have several symptoms that usually start gradually and then intensify. These are tingling or numbness in your fingers or hand that can feel like an electrical shock at times. The sensation travels all the way up your wrist to the top of your arm while holding an object, such as a steering wheel, telephone or newspaper. You may also have weakness in an affected hand and tend to drop items with that hand as well as having wrist pain at the same time. It is possible to notice the condition due to repetitive motions with your particular work ergonomics as well.

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Although they are not the exact causes of this condition, there are many factors that can increase your chances of getting it. A wrist fracture, dislocation, or arthritis in the area raises your risk. Your odds increase if you are a woman with a smaller carpal tunnel. Diabetes, which is a nerve-damaging disease, has also been known to contribute to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. An inflammatory condition called Rheumatoid arthritis and obesity can both can increase your risk of CTS. Work ergonomics can greatly affect anyone and predispose you to carpal tunnel syndrome. Some of the work-related activities are repetitive motions such as computer usage for many hours a day and servers that carry large trays loaded with food to customers in restaurants.

What are the Treatments for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Your treatment will depend on the severity of the condition. It could be as simple as a wrist splint, NSAID's and corticosteroids. The combination of these three items decreases your wrist pain and discomfort by decreasing your inflammation and swelling to decrease pressure on the affected nerve. You may require surgery to alleviate it. Some surgeons use endoscopic surgery as a non-invasive procedure and others use open surgery.
