Understanding a Herniated Disc

You have 23 discs in your spine located between each spinal bone (vertebrae). Spinal discs have strong fibers on the outside and soft, gel-like fluid on the inside. These discs improve mobility and shock absorption throughout the spinal column.

A herniated disc happens when cumulative or sudden stress causes the outer fibrous layer to tear, allowing the inner gel-like fluid to leak out. The damaged disc can trigger inflammation and irritate nearby nerves.

A bulging disc happens when a disc protrudes out of place, but doesn't tear.

Signs and Symptoms of Herniated Discs

Both herniated discs and bulging discs can occur anywhere in the spinal column and are most common in the neck and lower back. If a herniated disc causes symptoms, a person might notice:

  • Arm or leg pain, numbness, and weakness (if the herniated disc compresses a nearby nerve)
  • Back pain and stiffness
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Decreased tolerance to activity
  • Increased pain with movement, especially bending forward

Causes of Herniated Discs

Getting older is a leading risk factor for herniated discs. With age, the tissues in our discs tend to become weaker, thinner, and less elastic, making them more susceptible to injury.

Other risk factors for a herniated disc include:

  • Poor posture
  • Sudden trauma like a car accident, sports injury, or fall
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Physically demanding job
  • Frequent heavy lifting, bending, and twisting

Herniated Disc and Bulging Disc Treatment from Our Tallahassee Chiropractic Team

A herniated disc can cause tremendous and disabling pain. Even after the disc heals, there are often still residual symptoms like weakness, abnormal posture, or underlying movement imbalances. Our Tallahassee chiropractic staff can help your damaged spinal discs heal (and help you avoid surgery) through techniques like:

  • Non-invasive spinal decompression (to create a vacuum-like pressure that helps retract the disc material into place and attract healing nutrients and oxygen to the injured area)
  • Spinal adjustments
  • Exercises and stretches
  • Lifestyle counseling

At Magnolia Wellness Center, we'll always tailor your herniated disc treatment plan to meet your unique needs and goals.
