What's causing my neck pain?

Common underlying diagnoses of neck pain include:

  • Whiplash (acceleration/deceleration injury causing strain and tissue damage in the neck)
  • Cervical stenosis (spinal canal narrowing)
  • Cervical radiculopathy (compression of a nerve root in the neck)
  • Muscle strains and ligament sprains (acute soft tissue injuries which can lead to chronic inflammation if left untreated)
  • Ostearthritis (joint inflammation and breakdown)
  • Facet joint locks and other types of joint misalignments
  • Disc herniation or disc bulge (damage or protrusion of a disc, which may compress nerves and alter joint space)
  • Degenerative disc disease (narrowing and degeneration of the discs due to wear and tear)

Repetitive movement, especially overhead, and heavy lifting may also increase a person's risk of neck pain and many of the above conditions. Even the presence of other conditions such as depression, anxiety, and fibromyalgia can promote neck pain.

What signs and symptoms are frequently associated with neck pain?

Neck pain is often reported as stiff, sore, and tender. There may be reduced range of motion, especially when trying to turn the head to one side. Headaches, jaw pain, and shoulder pain may also occur, as well as motor and sensory changes in one or both arms (if nerve involvement is present).

How can a spinal adjustment help with my neck pain?

A spinal adjustment in the neck, upper back, or even lower back can relieve neck pain by realigning spinal joints (and thereby reducing relative load on the joints), triggering the release of natural pain killers, and gently relieving pressure on connective tissues in the cervical spine.

What other ways can a chiropractor in San Antonio provide neck pain treatment?

Research shows chiropractic care is effective for neck pain relief and prevention. In addition to spinal adjustments, our chiropractor in San Antonio provides other services which enhance the overall effectiveness of your neck pain treatment, such as:

  • Spinal decompression
  • Posture screens
  • Corrective exercises
  • Massage therapy
  • Ergonomic training and lifestyle counseling
