Living with arthritis: Natural relief for arthritis without medication

Chiropractic care alleviates the pain and stiffness associated with chronic low grade (CLG) inflammation and certain kinds of arthritis, without unnecessary pain medication like Naprosyn. While these types of pain medications can make life with arthritis more bearable, they come with unwanted side effects like stomach ulcers and an increased risk of a heart attack. In 2017, the American College of Physicians released new guidelines supporting the use of nonpharmacologic therapies, such as chiropractic and acupuncture, as first-line treatments for low back pain – before the use of medication.

By gently manipulating soft tissues, and improving alignment, chiropractors can restore joint function, relieve tenderness, and decrease muscle spasms. Chiropractic modalities can help people living with arthritis return to living an active lifestyle, in combination with supporting exercises, traction, and assisted stretching.

Types of arthritis with good chiropractic results

Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD) or spondylosis, is the most common form of arthritis. It's a degenerative form of arthritis that wears down the joints over time. More common in older patients, osteoarthritis starts with wear and tear on our joints.

Chiropractic care helps restore alignment to the spine and other joints and addresses cartilage and lubricant deficiency due to central nervous system problems. Spinal problems do not cause most types of arthritis. But, by addressing the musculoskeletal changes that occur secondary to arthritis, chiropractic care can reduce arthritic symptoms.

Chiropractic care eases the pain of osteoarthritis through improved movements of the joints and relaxing tight and spasmed muscles. Restored or improved proper nerve communication through the spine's alignment contributes to improved overall health and wellness. If you are experiencing back or neck pain due to osteoarthritis, chiropractic care is one of the safest therapies you can use to treat your condition.

Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis are common forms of arthritis caused by inflammation in the joints and the tissues surrounding them. These types of arthritis are not degenerative and respond well to chiropractic treatment.

The American Chiropractic Association recommends that chiropractors focus on helping people with rheumatoid arthritis by:

  • Improving their range of motion;
  • Improving flexibility and endurance;
  • Increasing muscle tone and strength; and
  • Providing diet and nutritional advice to address inflammation (a vital part of the pain and worsening of rheumatoid arthritis).

Get long-term relief from the pain of arthritis

If you are suffering from arthritis, losing weight, staying active, strengthening muscles, and applying hot or cold therapies are only short-term relief. Gentle spinal manipulation combined with an appropriate exercise and an anti-inflammatory diet regime won't "cure" arthritis. Still, it can substantially reduce pain and inflammation, improving mobility and quality of life. Who doesn't want to live life to their full potential? Don't let arthritis slow you down!
