Balance issues can make life difficult. It’s scary to feel off-balance, lightheaded, or that you might faint. The official medical term for this condition is vertigo. Another kind of balance problems relates to the musculoskeletal system. In both cases, a chiropractor may be able to help you. At The Wellness Center PDX in Portland, we’ve helped lots of people find their balance.
Balance Issues – Vertigo
Vertigo comes in two primary forms. The first is central vertigo, which results from a brain problem such as a tumor or dysfunctional cells in the nervous system. Peripheral vertigo is the result of an inner ear problem. However, there is a third form that can result from trauma to the neck. The injury can damage the nerve cells in the brain stem, causing them to malfunction and cause vertigo symptoms. The recurring dizziness can be hard to diagnose, as there is no lab test and the problem may not show up on X-rays.
Balance Issues – The Musculoskeletal System
Balance problems can become more common as people age. For example, many older people find it difficult to stand on one foot. Those who have chronic back pain often have what are called “sit to stand” and “stand to sit” issues. Pain can make them lose their balance as they change positions. Those who have lumbar spine instability also tend to sway if they try to stand with their eyes closed. Finally, weak core muscles in the trunk or in the large muscles of the buttock and thighs can make it difficult to maintain or regain balance when bending or reaching. Older adults who fall may be at risk of fractures.
Balance Issues and the Chiropractor
The first step in chiropractic treatment is a thorough history and physical assessment. During this process, the chiropractor can identify issues such as trauma, chronic pain, musculoskeletal weakness, and postural problems. All of these can contribute to balance problems. Adjusting the spine – particularly the neck and low back – correct alignment problems that are contributing to pain, dizziness and poor balance. An individualized corrective exercise program helps strengthen the core and leg muscles.
