During pregnancy many physical changes are occurring throughout the body. There is a shift of weight to front of the pelvis, hormonal fluctuations are regularly occurring and joints begin to loosen due to the presence of the hormone relaxin. All of this contributes to many new aches and pains women may feel while pregnant. Chiropractic care, massage therapy and acupuncture are conservative, safe and effective ways to manage musculoskeletal pain while pregnant.
Commonly in pregnancy women will experience low back pain. This occurs due to the intimate relationship between the pelvic muscles, ligaments uterus and sacrum. As the pregnancy progresses, the weight shifts forward and put more stress on the sacrum, ligaments and muscles. In addition the growing pregnancy can cause an imbalance in the pelvis. Misalignment of the pelvis is a common reason women experience low back pain during pregnancy. In addition to pain, this misalignment can contribute to intrauterine constraint causing less room for the baby, and making it difficult for the baby to get into the correct position for delivery. Gentle chiropractic adjustments and myofascial release (massage) can help correct any pelvic imbalances present.
Another common symptom coinciding with pregnancy is rib pain. Again as the weight shifts forward during pregnancy, this pulls on the oblique abdominals which attach to the lower ribs. In addition, as the hormone
relaxin is making joints looser to assist with delivery, it is acting throughout your whole body and may cause laxity at your costochondral joints. Using kinesiotape “KT tape” to create a “baby belt” can shift some of the load away from the front of pelvis and decrease the pull, as well as supporting the musculature attached to ribs. Acupuncture treatments to the area can help decrease any pain and inflammation.
