Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of arthritis and affects 25% of the
adult population. It is a common cause of pain in the knees, hips, and
hands as we age. Stiffness, swelling, and pain after or during movement are
common. Arthritis is progressive and is caused by the erosion of the layer
of cartilage that lines the bony surfaces of our joints. Cartilage is a
firm connective tissue that provides a smooth surface for our bones to move
against each other on. When damaged or worn down friction occurs between
the bones causing pain. Articular cartilage is unable to perform
spontaneous repair because it does not have it’s own nerve or blood supply. It
will continue to worsen over time and the standard of care for advanced
arthritis of the knee or hip is joint replacement surgery. The term “bone
on bone” arthritis refers to the most severe form of arthritis where the
cartilage is either gone from places in the joint or very minimal.
While generally thought to be irreversible, stem cell therapy and
regenerative medicine show incredible promise in treating arthritis. At The
Wellness Center, we have been treating osteoarthritis, as well as other
chronic and acute conditions, with our regenerative medicine program and
have seen significant improvement in both pain and function for patients
whose only other option was joint replacement surgery. Whether you are an
established patient or a new patient, you are welcome to schedule a
consultation with one of our experts to see if regenerative medicine could
help improve your quality of life.
