Sciatic Pain

Sciatic Pain Treatment in Portland

Sciatic pain, commonly referred to as "sciatica," refers to irritation of the nerve roots that originate from the low back and sacrum. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. One could imagine that when this nerve gets compressed, it causes a variety of symptoms such as pain, numbness, or tingling. These symptoms can radiate from the low back, through the buttock, and down the back of the thigh. Causes of nerve root compression include disc herniation that press on the sciatic nerve, acute injuries to the spine, joint degeneration, as well as many other factors.

This condition may be diagnosed through a nerve conduction study, which determines where the nerve is impinged, or "pinched" along it's track. X-rays are also a helpful diagnostic tool in visualizing which vertebrae may be compressed in the low back.

The best treatment for this condition includes a whole-person approach to address joints, nerves, muscles and other structures around the sciatic nerve. Chiropractic adjustments help to increase mobility of the spinal column and therefore reduce nerve irritation. Trigger point injections can disrupt pain signals by acting on tight muscles around the sciatic nerve. Acupuncture and massage can help to reduce pain and inflammation. Cupping is an effective method in decompressing tissues around the nerve, while electrostimulation with acupuncture can promote sensory and motor fiber regeneration after a nerve injury. Lastly, therapeutic exercise is crucial not only in promoting physical function, but also in preventing recurrence of symptoms.

Reviews From our Satisfied Patients

  • "I had a really attentive chiropractor who made sure that I was comfortable and heard about all of the offered services that would help me with my back problems. I came away feeling confident that the doc would help any way they can, and that's always cool. Definitely recommend."

  • "I was very impressed with the whole crew at Wellness Center PDX! Professional and compassionate, from the front desk to the clinicians. They talked me through procedures to ensure that I understood what was happening and what they needed to accomplish. Some temporary facilities issues (the A/C was scheduled for repairs, as it had not been operated since the previous autumn, and had been found to be out of repair) marred the visit, but staff had worked to mitigate the impact. Definitely worth a second visit. I'm glad I went."

  • "Everyone here is so nice! From Catina and Patricia at the front to Dr Gabriel, Nicole, and Daniel, everyone is so amazing! They are dedicated and patient with their explanations and treatments. Love my visits"
