Child Nutrition

Using simple testing, Dr. Neary can look into what your child looks like from a nutritional standpoint. Why is this important? Because nutritional testing allows insight about how your child's body is working; it can tell us if there are adequate nutrients, which are the main building blocks for the body to work correctly.

First, we start with your child's daily nutrition. Many of the problems we see stem from a poor diet. Carbohydrates are one of the most commonly consumed food items; they are usually high in calories, and due to the processing, they are not easily broken down by young bodies. Some carbohydrates have what are called high glycemic indexes, which can adversely alter insulin levels and blood sugar regulation, which can cause weight gain, fatigue irritability, lost endurance, and even juvenile diabetes.

One large factor that has changed how the body absorbs nutrients is how fast the food moves through your system. This is called peristalsis, and is controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and organ connection. Muscles along the intestine squeeze the food along its path by rhythmic contractions. Sometimes this occurs too slowly or quickly, leading toward not only changes in the body's ability to absorb nutrients, but also a build-up of toxic substances if too slow. Chiropractic care can have a positive effect on normalizing the movement of food through a child's gut, allowing for the best absorption of nutrients.

Remember the phrase, "you are what you eat?" It's true! Taking this phrase a step further, "you are what your body absorbs." Simply put, only the nutrients absorbed into your body are what makes your body; even on a "perfect diet," your child's body may not be taking in all of what is needed for good health; if his or her intestinal system is not working properly, your child's body cannot absorb nutrients at its best ability.
