How does chiropractic work?

Chiropractic works beause you are a self-healing, self-regulating organism controlled by your nervous system.  Millions of instructions flow from your brain, down the spinal cord and out to every organ and tissue.  Signals sent back to the brain confirm if your body is working right.

Improper motion or position of the moving bones of the spine, called a subluxation, can interfere with this vital exchange by irritating nerves and compromising the function of affected muscles, organs, and tissues.  Specific spinal adjustments can help improve mindbody communications.  Health often returns with improved nervous system control of the body.

What is a subluxation?

A subluxation is the condition of a single or multiple spinal vertebrae that has lost its/their proper alignment (caused by physical, chemical or emotional trauma), relative to surrounding vertebrae, that causes pathomechanical stress on the vertebrae's joints and discs that, if left uncorrected, can lead to degenerative joint and disc disease, compromised neural integrity and a reduced state of overall health.  This is why so many people with various ailments and symptoms seem to benefit from chiropractic adjustments and report not just improvement in their main complaint of musculoskeletal pain but also improved organ system function and general health.

A subluxation is evaluated, diagnosed, and managed through the use of chiropractic procedures based on the best available rational and empirical evidence that can include findings such as abnormal spinal posture, measurable reduced spinal range of motion, paraspinal muscle spasm with tenderness, tenderness of the affected vertebrae, measurable paraspinal heat differences and measurable abnormal neuroconductivity of the affected muscles....and sometimes, but not always...general pain.

Note: A chiropractic subluxation differs from a medical subluxation where a medical subluxation refers to a dislocation.

How do I know if I have a subluxation?

You can have subluxations and not even know it.  Similar to heart disease, tooth decay or cancer, subluxations can be present before warning signs appear.  The results of a thorough examination can show the location and severity of subluxations you may have.

Do adjustments hurt?

For most patients, chiropractic adjustments are painless.  Many patients report an immediate feeling of relief and/or a sense of well being after the adjustment.  Some patients who are new to chiropractic may involuntarily stiffen or resist the adjustment and feel a small amount of discomfort until they are able to relax.

How many adjustments will I need?

Many patients feel better with just 1-2 treatments, while others who have serious injuries or chronic conditions may need several months for treatment and rehabilitation.  Dr. Tio will carefully evaluate your unique situation and make recommendations to achieve your health goals.

Do I have a slipped disc?

The disc is a soft pulpy "shock absorber".  It has a fibrous outer ring which holds in a jelly-like material.  A "slipped disc" is a common way to refer to a wide variety of disc problems.  However, a disc can't slip because of the way it attaches to the spinal bones above and below it.  A disc can bulge.  It can protrude.  It can extrude/herniate.  But it can't slip.

Disc problems are best seen via an MRI scan.  One who has a disc protrusion or extrusion can experience radiating pain, numbness/tingling and or weakness in the extremities.  Chiropractic is a safe and conservative approach to caring for discs in the above mentioned conditions, however, in some instances a neurosurgical consult may be warranted.

Will my insurance cover chiropractic care?

Because we want to offer the highest quality of chiropractic care and not limit treatment options to you, we are not in-network with any insurance company.  However, if you have a PPO insurance plan, we can bill your insurance company on an out-of-network basis.  If your insurance doesn't cover chiropractic, you have an HMO, or don't have insurance coverage at all, we offer payment plans that correlate to your current conditon and health goals.  We also accept payment through Health Savings Accounts (HSA Plans), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA Plans) and accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover.  In any case, Dr. Tio will work with you on getting you the care you need at a cost you can afford.
