It's A Wonderful Life

"It's a Wonderful Life"

Hello, my friends.

 "Do what you love.
 Love what you do."

  - from my "Life is Good" coffee cup

The other day I was giving what we call the "Doctor's Report" to some of our new patients, which is the standard procedure in our office.  We get a few people together, sit them down in front of a PowerPoint presentation, and explain, from the unique perspective of my particular profession, the mostly unknown and little understood truth about how our bodies work, what goes wrong with us, and what we can do to make ourselves better.

I wasn't overly excited about this particular group - from all appearances and for reasons that I won't go into now, they just weren't a very promising bunch.  I suspected that I probably wasn't going to get through to them, either because they wouldn't understand, wouldn't believe or trust me, didn't want to be there, didn't care, or some combination of the above.

Suddenly, in the middle of my class, I was surprised by an unexpected sensation.  It was unmistakable, and it really caught me off guard, considering my attitude going in.  The feeling welled up within me out of nowhere, and it wasn't depression, or disappointment, or frustration such as I might have expected in that situation.  I felt… believe it or not… happy.  I knew that I was in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing.  It was a feeling of fulfillment… of joy.

I realized in that moment that I was following a destiny laid out for me nearly 35 years ago, when a friend in St. Louis drew a diagram on his kitchen table and explained the foundational principles and philosophy behind the work in which I have since been engaged.  I remembered that I'm still chasing the vision that dragged me out of my pre-law path and into chiropractic school, and despite the unforeseen difficulties, obstacles and setbacks of the road I've traveled since that night, I knew that I was still moving in the right direction, and that I still love it.  I do still love it so.

Why?

Over the past few years, it has gradually dawned on me that one thing people desperately need, and perhaps the one thing we need the most, is to be uplifted and inspired.  We need hope.  It's a cold world out there, and we all need to be able to lift our faces to the sun and feel its warmth.  When it seems like everything around us is negative and bad, we need someone to help us see, hear, feel and know the good.

One of my favorite movie scenes is from, "A Beautiful Mind," in which the main character's wife, instead of giving up on her brilliant but deeply disturbed husband, sits him down on their bed, kneels at his feet, looks up into his eyes and says, "I need to believe that something extraordinary is possible."  I need to believe that, too.

The Vision

There lies within each of us a "Power," an "Organizing Intelligence," a "Pure Potential" that is perfect.  It's the same intangible "something" that we can easily observe in all the world around us, in all expressions of Life, in all the beauty and majesty that challenges our minds and thrills our hearts.  It's what makes our lives worth living, and it is our most wondrous gift from God, whoever or whatever God might be.

I don't pretend to understand this phenomenal blessing, but I know from practical, daily experience with real patients that wherever it comes from, it flows through human bodies from "Above - Down," and from the "Inside - Out."  I know that any interference to the expression of this "Innate Intelligence" through the brain, down the spinal cord, and out into every organ, tissue and cell of the body results in a dimming of our "Inner Light," a diminishing of our human potential, and a frustration of our God-given ability to move forward and upward throughout our lives.   And finally, I know that my life mission and my life's work is, to the best of my ability, to remove that interference and restore the connection between what we are and what we were meant to be, and to spread that message of hope to as many kindred spirits as I can touch.

On the other side of my coffee cup is a big dog on a snow sled, plummeting down a mountain, wearing sunglasses and a woolen cap with a tassel.  It's obvious from the expression on his face that he's doing what he loves, loving what he does, and having a "doggone" good time.  I'm with him.

Wishing you health, happiness and peace,

Dr. Frank Bowling
