What Is the Graston Technique?

The Graston Technique is a type of physical therapy that uses instruments to manipulate or move soft tissues. This technique is used by over 32,000 chiropractic care facilities and physical therapists across the United States, and we are proud to offer it at Lifetime Health and Wellness for our Westminster and Broomfield, CO, patients.

How the Graston Technique Works

The Graston Technique uses a range of specially designed instruments that can manipulate soft tissues through massage. Essentially, the chiropractic care provider is able to select a specific tool, then use that tool to move a muscle so that pressure on other nerves and bones is alleviated. The exact tool and the way it is used is determined by the type of injury and the practitioner's training.

This technique has been used for years and is often used by practitioners for major sports leagues and by physical therapists. It has shown remarkable success for thousands of patients who have not been able to get significant pain relief from drugs or surgical procedures.

The Graston Protocol

This technique is usually used as part of an overall protocol that has been designed to promote healing and recovery. Before the massage portion of the therapy, patients undergo a brief cardiovascular warm-up that improves blood flow throughout the body. Once this is completed, the patient goes into the massage portion of the therapy, called the Graston Technique.

Immediately after this, a patient goes into the stretching and cool-down portion of therapy. This part of therapy involves light stretching of the affected area and the placement of cold packs.
