Avoid Injuries During the Winter Months

Avoid Injuries During the Winter Months

Winter sports are great for staying in shape through the colder months. Many individuals enjoy skiing, sledding, snowboarding and ice skating. Our chiropractor in Broomfield would like to remind you to stay safe and injury free this season and provide you with a few tips on staying healthy.

Protecting Your Health During Cold Weather Sports

The first step to protecting your health and staying safe and active during the winter months is by wearing the appropriate cold weather clothing. Cold weather thermal injuries occur when skin is left exposed, or the individual spends too much time outdoors in freezing temperatures. To stay frostbite-free, individuals should wear layers. The layer closest to the skin should be thin and wick moisture away from the skin. This is especially important for hands and feet because they are most prone to frostbite due to poor circulation and being further away from the heart and the majority of your body heat.

It is also important to stay hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water. Hot beverages containing sugar and caffeine do not replace fluids lost while participating in cold weather sports.

We also recommend proper conditioning and stretching. Skiing, snowboarding and ice skating require strong leg and core muscles. Individuals planning to participate in cold weather sports should lift weights and exercise their legs at least two times per week before the start of the season.

Winter Sports Injury Treatment

If you experience pain during your winter sporting activities, it is important to stop the activity and have the potential injury examined by our chiropractor or a medical professional. Continuing to exercise could further injury the area and delay your recovery.

Our chiropractor offers holistic treatments, including chiropractic adjustments, orthotics, kinesiotaping and sports taping, massage therapy, laser therapy and acupuncture to help heal your sports injuries and get you outside and back on the slopes.
