What You Should Know About Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia Treatment from your Charlotte Chiropractor

Although fibromyalgia is a misunderstood condition, many people are diagnosed with it each year. At Weig Chiropractic Center, we strive to alleviate symptoms of fibromyalgia including back pain and general muscle weakness.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia Defined

Pain throughout your musculoskeletal system is the main symptom of fibromyalgia. In many cases, weakness occurs simultaneously with the pain. Some people who have the condition experience fatigue, mood issues and memory problems. It's common for people who have fibromyalgia to experience tension headaches, anxiety and depression along with the fibromyalgia.

Cause of Fibromyalgia

Currently, the cause of fibromyalgia isn't known. Researchers speculate there's repeated nerve stimulation in the brain that triggers changes in the chemicals responsible for the body's reaction to pain. Certain factors make a person more at risk for the condition such as genetics. It appears as though there's a genetic mutation passed down from generation to generation that causes the condition. In some cases, the onset of fibromyalgia is caused by an infection such as the flu or the Epstein-Barr virus. If somebody who has fibromyalgia develops one of these infections, it may worsen the patient's symptoms. Sometimes, physical or emotional trauma triggers fibromyalgia.

Chiropractic Care for Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Generally, we have to manage each symptom separately since there isn't one treatment that manages all of the symptoms. Although you may still need the care of a practitioner for some of your symptoms, we're able to decrease your back pain and manage many other symptoms. For instance, we might conduct a chiropractic adjustment, also known as a spinal alignment. Our doctor uses his hands to move the vertebrae in the spine. The manual manipulation helps the discs and vertebrae to realign, which reduces pressure in your back. It has the potential to relieve neck pain as well. We might conduct spinal decompression, which helps relieve pressure on the back as well. Spinal decompression involves stretching the spine.

Our chiropractor may recommend participating in exercise therapy, which has the potential to increase your range of motion and possibly reduce pain. Our chiropractor will recommend exercises that help to increase both your strength and stamina. It may help relieve fatigue as well.

Massage therapy relieves many of the symptoms of fibromyalgia including pain, weakness, fatigue and mood changes. It has the potential to reduce anxiety and promote a better night's sleep.

Lifestyle changes help with many of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Our chiropractor may recommend nutritional changes that ensure you're getting an adequate amount of nutrients in order to increase your energy levels. The chiropractor may recommend ways to lose weight since excess weight is hard on your musculoskeletal system.
