The Difference Between Headaches and Migraines

There are several types of headaches, most commonly tension headaches, sinus headaches and cluster headaches. While annoying, and in the case of cluster headaches, quite painful, they usually tend to be a dull, aching nuisance instead of a debilitating condition.

Migraines, on the other hand, are much more severe and longer lasting. These throbbing, intense headaches, generally affecting only one side of the head, can last for days and usually include neurological symptoms as well as head pain. These symptoms are called “aura,” and include seeing spots or flashing lights, nausea or vomiting, confusion and numbness in the face or hands. Migraines are hereditary and 75% of sufferers are women.

Common Causes of Chronic Headaches and Migraines

Tension headaches, the most common type, are generally caused by bad posture, stress, anxiety, and muscle strain. Other headache triggers may include blood pressure issues, sinus infection, fatigue and tight neck or upper back muscles.

Migraines happen when the blood vessels in the brain constrict and then dilate. This dilation increases the blood pressure in the head, which causes pounding pain. Triggers for migraines vary for each person, and remain relatively mysterious. However, common triggers include lack of sleep, flickering lights, changing weather patterns, excess stress and dietary choices. They may also be impacted by hormonal fluctuations, nitrates, MSG and strong odors.

How Our Charlotte Chiropractor Can Manage Migraine Pain

Chiropractic care has shown significant improvement in patients with chronic headaches or migraine pain. By manipulating the spine and adjusting its alignment, stress and inflammation are reduced and extra blood is able to flow through the area, which promotes healing. The best improvement is found when the upper two cervical vertebrae are manipulated, as well as the cervical and thoracic spine junctions. Common chiropractic techniques used for relieving headache and migraine pain include spinal decompression and trigger point therapy. Chiropractic work is natural, safe and provides nearly immediate relief.

Dr. Weig will provide a comprehensive examination of your symptoms and create a treatment plan based on your individual needs. At Weig Chiropractic Center, we offer our patients a free, transparent, no-obligation preliminary appointment to get you on the road to recovery.
