Chiropractic Care for Sciatica in Bellbrook, OH

man with back pain from sciatica

Sciatica is caused by an impingement or irritation of the nerve that goes from the lower spine all the way to your ankle. This results in pain which can be excruciating. It can also cause numbness, tingling, and weakness in the buttocks or leg. In true sciatica, the problem originates in the spine. However, irritation of this nerve can happen at any point along its length. This produces the same symptoms, but these conditions are technically considered to be different since the impingement isn't in the same place. They are said to cause sciatica-like pain.

How a Chiropractor Can Help with Sciatica

Chiropractic spinal adjustment is a great help for true sciatica. It relieves the impingements and irritation of the sciatic nerve and can provide nearly instant relief of pain. Further treatment, such as corrective exercises, may be used to help keep the problem from returning and to strengthen muscles that have been weakened by the condition or the accompanying lack of general exercise.

Though pain relief may happen quickly, you'll almost certainly need multiple spinal adjustments for permanent results. These will take place over several sessions.

Chiropractic Care for Sciatica-Like Pain

Sciatic pain occurs when the sciatic nerve impinges in an area other than the spinal column. One of the most common areas of involvement is the piriformis muscle which lies deep within the buttocks, underneath the gluteus maximus. When this muscle is swollen or inflamed, it can pinch the sciatic nerve where it runs through it.

In this case, deep massage, careful stretching, and corrective exercises are used to relieve the pressure on the nerve and reduce the inflammation of the muscle. Similar muscle-based impingements on the sciatic nerve are treated in the same way. A spinal adjustment may still be called for because often, problems in the spine are what originally caused the issues further down.
