What Causes Shoulder Pain?

The shoulder is a simple ball and socket joint. It has a wide range of movement, which makes it susceptible to injury and pain. Shoulder pain is the result of many conditions, including strains from overexertion, tendonitis from overuse, dislocations, arthritis, fractures, frozen shoulder, and pinched nerves.

The majority of all shoulder pain cases are related to the irritation of the nerves in the upper back and lower neck. This makes the condition very treatable with chiropractic care from a licensed chiropractor.

How the Shoulder Works

The shoulder socket is very small in comparison to other ball and socket joints in the body, like the hip joint. It’s held together by a set of muscles that are secured to the bones with tendons. A capsule forms where the muscles and tendons come together to support the movement of the joint. There is also lubrication inside the joint to protect the bones from impact and prevents the shoulder joints from rubbing together.

Treating Shoulder Pain

Regardless of the issue, your chiropractor can diagnose and determine exactly where the source of your shoulder irritation is. Diagnoses are done by a complete physical examination of the shoulder. Your doctor will notate where the pain it and how the joint moves. X-rays and other diagnostic tests may be given to determine the exact cause of the pain. Once a diagnosis is made, treatment can begin. This usually takes the form of spinal and shoulder adjustments. Your chiropractor may also recommend massage or physical therapy as part of your treatment routine.

When to See Your Chiropractor

You may be tempted to wait it out to see if the pain goes away on its own or if it gets better without intervention. For minor irritation, rest and ice may make your shoulder feel better. If it doesn't go away after approximately two weeks, it's a good idea to call in for a checkup. You should also see your chiropractor immediately if you develop pain in both shoulders, if you also have pain in your thighs and if you feel feverish and unwell.
