Pinched Nerve

Pinched Nerve Treatment at Cornerstone Chiropractic

A pinched nerve can cause everything from pain and numbness to loss of physical function. To make matters worse, this problem is likely to continue or recur until you put a stop to its underlying cause. Here at Cornerstone Chiropractic, we can administer safe, non-surgical pinched nerve treatment that does just that.

Understanding Nerve Impingement

Whenever something pushes against a nerve strongly enough to interfere with the normal passage of signals, that nerve is said to be impinged, pinched or compressed. Common causes of nerve impingement include:

Vertebral misalignment - The major nerve roots of the spine don't have much room to extend through the available gaps along the spinal column. If your spine is out of alignment, some of those nerve roots can easily become pinched.

Herniated disc - When a vertebral disc develops a rupture in its cartilaginous outer casing, the gelatinous inner material may bulge out of the opening. Herniated discs can cause not only nerve compression but also pain from the inflammatory substances in the discs' inner material.

Pregnancy - Pregnancy causes weight gain and changes in posture in preparation for birth. These changes can put extra pressure on the major nerve roots, especially in the lumbar spine, resulting in low back pain and sciatica symptoms.

Acute injuries - An acute injury can suddenly and violently dislocate joint structures in the neck, back or extremities, with the abnormal position putting the pinch on nerve tissue.

Repetitive motion injuries - Repetitive motion injuries that create tiny, chronic tears in soft tissues typically produce inflammation and swelling. The enlarged tissues may then press on major nerves.

Arthritis - Chronic joint inflammation associated with spinal arthritis can create swelling that pinches the major nerve roots.

Bone Spurs - Bone spurs sometimes develop in the vicinity of nerve tissue as the side effect of chronic inflammation (such as arthritis or tendinitis). This sets the stage for nerve compression.

Nerve impingement can occur anywhere along the complex network of the nervous system. The symptoms you experience will depend in part on the location of the impingement, but they generally include pains, "pins and needles," tingling, numbness, and loss of control over the body part governed by the pinched nerve.

How Our Everett Chiropractor Can Help

Our Everett chiropractor, Dr. Lichfield, can relieve your pinched nerve issues by addressing the reason for that compression. Your pinched nerve treatment may include multiple healing modalities. For instance, spinal adjustments (including pregnancy chiropractic care), extremity adjustments, and custom orthotics can relieve musculoskeletal dislocations and imbalances to take the pinching off of your nerves. Massage therapy and nutritional counseling can help you fight pain and inflammation the natural way, while corrective exercises to optimize your posture can help you avoid future impingement.
