Nutritional Counseling

Nutritional counseling is part of the "whole body" approach to chiropractic medicine and healing that we practice at ProHealth Center in Clinton, SC. Maintaining a healthy body weight for your height and age can help to stave off many chronic health conditions down the road. Plus, certain patients can benefit from nutritional counseling to help treat chronic health conditions that are impacted by diet.

What is Nutritional Counseling?

Nutritional counseling involves talking with a specialist about what you eat and working out a plan to improve your health through diet. This does not necessarily mean coming up with a weight loss plan, although that can be a part of it. A specialist will analyze the meals you are eating, the time of day when you're eating, how often you are snacking and so on -- but the process also involves determining whether your diet is deficient in certain vitamins and nutrients that are needed for optimal health.

For example, most Americans are at least partly deficient in vitamin B12, even though we have access to tons of leafy green vegetables at every grocery store. A nutritional counselor might help you identify areas where you should be eating more of certain types of foods (or less), based on your individual health history and your personal health goals.

Your First Nutritional Counseling Appointment

At your first appointment for nutritional counseling at ProHealth Center, we will talk about your medical history and your diet. Be prepared to bring a "food diary" to your first appointment. This is a diary that you keep for several days in which you write down everything that you eat and drink during that period. We'll ask you to keep track of exactly what foods you eat, the portion sizes, the times of day when you eat meals or snacks, whether or not you skip breakfast every Tuesday in a rush to get to work, and so on. Once the specialist has a good picture of your overall nutritional habits, a plan to improve your health can be crafted for you.

Nutritional Counseling Recommendations

A healthy food plan will be crafted for you based on your goals or health needs. If weight loss is your goal, the counseling will be geared in that direction. If you need nutritional guidelines to manage a chronic health condition, such as heart disease, diabetes or Celiac disease, your plan will reflect that. ProHealth Center also offers advice on nutritional supplement use, IV nutrient therapy, and other treatments to complement your nutritional and health goals.
