Acupuncture

Acupuncture as a technique where needles are inserted in specific sites across the body for balancing the flow of energy within the body. There are many different ways to perform acupuncture so if one style does not resonate another may. Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue to boosts the body's natural painkillers and increase blood flow. Patients who have bleeding issues should mention this to the practitioner before treatment to prevent unnecessary bruising.

.

Electro-Stimulation

The electro-stimulation device uses clips that are attached to acupuncture needles during a treatment to continuously stimulate specific points. The frequency and intensity is adjusted for each treatment. This is a great treatment for chronic pain, muscle spasms, and neurological disorders. E-stim should not be used on patients who have a history of seizures, epilepsy, or on patients with pacemakers.

.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is an herb called artemesia vulgaris or mugwart that is used to create a pleasant heating sensation for the patient that penetrates deep into the skin. There are several forms of moxibustion. Compressed herb is the most commonly used which is lighted and held over the area being treated until the skin turns red. Moxibustion can be placed on the tip of a needle and then ignited to generate heat to the point and surrounding tissue. A great deal of smoke and a strong odor are produced with this treatment and caution should be given when respiratory problems or sensitivity to odors is an issue.

.

Cupping

Fire-cupping is the process of igniting a cotton ball soaked in alcohol and placing it inside a cup to remove the oxygen. The cup is placed on the skin and a vacuum is created due to the lack of oxygen. Cupping breaks obstruction, stimulates the blood flow, and creates an avenue for drawing out the toxins in an area of the body. This treatment can cause swelling and bruising on the skin that is usually painless and should go away within 5-7 days. Cupping should not be used on patients who bleed easily or on areas where the skin is inflamed. Pregnant women should not have cupping on the abdomen or low back.

.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a technique that uses a ceramic spoon to “scrape” the surface of oiled skin until red or purple spots appear. Guasha has an anti-inflammatory effect and stimulates the immune system. Increased blood flow to local muscles and the surrounding tissue brings nutrients in and carry waste out. This is a great treatment for issues such as headache, migrane, neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, knee pain, fever, flu, asthma, and bronchitis. This treatment causes redness and bruising on the skin that can take up to 7 days to resolve. Gua Sha contra-indications are the same as cupping.
