JAMA Suggests Chiropractic Care for Low Back Pain

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) recommends patients with low back pain consider chiropractic care.  A JAMA article released at the end of April says surgery is often not necessary and should only be a consideration once more conservative treatment options - like chiropractic - have been explored.

Low back pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder that affects 80% of us at some point in time, and is the most common cause of job-related disability in the U.S. Low back pain can result from injury, overuse, aggravation or other stresses on the muscles, bones or other soft tissues that create stability and flexibility in the back.  But, with conservative chiropractic treatment measures, the symptoms of low back pain typically show significant improvement within just a few weeks - without the use of drugs or surgery.

Exercise and good posture habits can help keep your back in good shape.  The muscles in the back work with your abdominals to keep you balanced and upright. Whether you’re exercising, lifting heavy objects, grocery bags or children, it’s important to use proper technique to avoid placing uneven stress on the back.  The old adage, “lift with your legs, not with your back,” is still good - and legitimate - advice.

Chiropractic physicians, like those at Greenapple Sports and Wellness, should be your first line of defense in treating your low back pain.  Our understanding of the neuromusculoskeletal system and its connection to the rest of the body are essential in diagnosing the cause(s) of your pain and recommending a course of action to keep you pain-free.

Other ways to ensure a healthy back:

  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Warm-up before and cool-down properly after activity.
  • Maintain proper posture, including while at your desk!
  • Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.
  • Sleep on your back.
  • Lift with heavy objects with your leg muscles, not your back.
  • Regular chiropractic care to ensure proper alignment and balance.
