Acupuncture

According to Chinese philosophy, the body contains two opposing forces: *yin* and *yang*. When these forces are in balance, the body is healthy. Energy, called “Qi” (pronounced “chee”), flows like rivers along pathways, or *meridians*, throughout the body. This constant flow of energy keeps the yin and yang balanced. However, the flow of energy can sometimes be blocked, like water getting stuck behind a dam. A disruption in the flow of energy can lead to illness.

Approximately 500 different acupuncture points lie along the body’s meridians. The idea behind acupuncture is that stimulating these points with acupuncture needles or pressure relieves obstructions in the flow of energy, enabling the body to heal.

In the Western view, acupuncture likely works by stimulating the central nervous system

(the brain and spinal cord) to release chemicals called *neurotransmitters* and *hormones*. These chemicals dull pain, boost the immune system and regulate various body functions.

The needles used are hair-thin and are designed not to cut the skin. They are inserted gently and shallowly and the experience of having acupuncture is in no way like having an injection.

Acupuncture is still the primary medical system for 1/4 of the world’s population. It is the oldest and most commonly used systems of healing in the world. Its popularity on the West has been growing rapidly since President Nixon’s visit to China and icebreaking article in New York Times about pain control with acupuncture.

The reasons for this popularity are simple. People who’ve tried acupuncture are usually amazed by the outcomes and tell their friends and family.

Acupuncture is recognized by World Health Organization and is proven to treat various conditions such as neuro-musculoskeletal issues like arthritis, neuralgia, insomnia, dizziness, back and neck pain. It shows amazing results with emotional and psychological disorder like depression and anxiety, circulatory disorders, addictions, gastrointestinal conditions, respiratory disorders, fertility issues, and weight loss. It is also very effective for the palliative care for cancer patients and people dealing with autoimmune conditions.
