What is Regenerative Medicine

What Is Regenerative Medicine?

The goal of regenerative medicine is to replace organs or tissue that have been damaged by trauma, congenital issues, or disease. A combination of different types of approaches can help the natural healing process where it’s needed the most or take over the function of a permanently damaged organ. This is a newer field that combines experts in computer science, genetics, engineering, chemistry, medicine, robotics, and biology. It aims to find solutions to some of the most challenging medical problems. The goal of regenerative medicine is to find a way to cure injuries and diseases that were previously untreatable. Chiropractic care at Summit Medical Care Center in Broomfield can be a part of regenerative medicine.

Concentrations in Regenerative Medicine

There are different concentrations in regenerative medicine that professionals are working on:

Tissue Engineering

This is a strategy that involves scaffolds being placed in the body where new tissue needs to be formed. The scaffold will attack cells so new tissue is in the shape that is needed. This field is still new but millions of patients have been treated and there has been a success with soft tissue regeneration.

Stem Cell Therapy

There are millions of stem cells found in every person. One way the body repairs itself is with stem cells. Stem cells that are injected can help with the diseased or damaged organs and tissues. Cells for stem cell therapy can be collected from fat, bone marrow, blood, or additional sources. Cord blood can also provide another way to get adult stem cells.

Artificial Organs and Medical Devices

When an organ fails, the usual strategy is to transplant a replacement from a donor. There are challenges with this strategy, including the availability of organ donors and other requirements for donors. There are plenty of examples where it takes time to find a match for a donor organ that requires a strategy or support until an organ is found. Circulatory support is one of these examples and there are now devices that can be used long term. Clinicians and scientists are developing and evaluating devices that are used to replace the function of different organs, including the kidneys, liver, lungs, and heart.
