Chiropractic Treatment for Scoliosis

What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition where a person's backbone curves to the side. The curve's angle varies from patient to patient. If the curve is more than 10 degrees it is considered scoliosis.

What Causes Scoliosis?

About 80 percent of scoliosis cases are idiopathic.

A normal looking spine with a curve is nonstructural scoliosis. It’s caused by muscle spasms, one leg being longer than the other, and appendicitis or other inflammations. This type of scoliosis eventually goes away with treatment.

In cases of structural scoliosis, the spine's curve is hard and cannot be reversed. Causes of structural scoliosis are birth defects, cerebral palsy, tumors, muscular dystrophy, infections, Downs syndrome, Marfan syndrome, and other genetic conditions.

What Are the Symptoms of Scoliosis?

Symptoms of scoliosis vary between adults and children. Children with scoliosis usually develop it between the ages of 8 and 10. Some patients don't have any symptoms. When symptoms are present, they include pushed out ribs, shoulders that aren't straight, both sides of the back are different heights when bent forward, a head that isn’t centered with the body, arms that do not hang down straight, and hips that are not the same height.

Adults with scoliosis have chronic back pain, bone spurs, hips and shoulders that are not even with each other, decreasing height, a visible bump in the lower back, fatigue, pain, weakness, or numbness in the legs, difficulty standing up straight, and trouble walking.
