Back To School: Neck, Back, and Shoulder Pains

Our Summit Medical Care Center Discusses Back To School: Neck, Back, and Shoulder Pains

Dealing with shoulder pain from the weight of backpacks, neck pain from looking at computers or textbooks, or back pain from sitting at a desk for several hours are just some of the incidents that occur when going back to school. Making an appointment with our chiropractor at Summit Medical Care Center can alleviate pain effectively. Here is some information about thwarting pain when school classes are necessary.

Kids walking into school wearing backpacks

Select the Proper Backpacks for School

Before picking out backpacks to use for school, it is best to determine which one would fit your books without difficulty. If you stuff several books into a backpack and sling it across your back, you are bound to deal with shoulder pain from excess weight. Break up the weight of your books by storing a few in a backpack and carry the rest in your arms. Purchase a backpack with wide shoulder straps to minimize discomfort.

Take Breaks to Stretch the Limbs

If you are required to sit down at a desk for long durations of time while at school, you may find that you are dealing with back pain at the end of the day. If you are allotted break time, get up from your seat and stretch the body for the duration of your intermission. If you need to remain in your seat, outstretch your legs and extend your arms forward or outward a few times an hour to keep your blood circulating as needed.

Avoid Looking Down for too Long

Looking in a downward direction for a long time can lead to neck pain. People who use electronic devices often suffer from "text neck". This can also occur when reading books or doing assignments at a desk as well. Consider investing in a book or electronic device holder to keep necessary materials upright.
