How Neurofeedback Therapy & Brainmapping Helps with Anxiety

Broomfield Neurofeedback Therapy for Anxiety

Anxiety disorders affect over 25 million Americans, which means about 30% of adults will have an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives. Anxiety disorders cause elevated feelings of anxiousness, nervousness, fear, and anxiety. Luckily, anxiety disorders are treatable and most people are capable of leading normal, productive lives.

Neurofeedback therapy is an effective way to improve your brain function through the use of brain training exercises. Through neurofeedback therapy, we are able to use positive reinforcement to teach your brain to self-regulate. It’s entirely painless and non-invasive, making it a great alternative to riskier treatments, such as addictive medication.

We have been providing natural, drug-free treatment for patients in the area since 1997. Dr. Brad Richardson and our team at the Summit Medical Care Center can provide you with the relief you seek from panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Causes & Symptoms: Anxiety

Anxiety disorders often cause fatigue because your body and mind exert energy being in a constant hypervigilant state. Anxiety can also cause insomnia, headaches, digestive problems, immune system weakness, and muscle tensions. Anxiety and anxiety disorders can lead to fatal long-term effects, such as heart disease and myocardial infarctions.

Depending on your anxiety disorder your symptoms may vary. Anxiety disorders are often associated with physical symptoms and can even cause chronic pain and/or nausea. It is not entirely known what triggers anxiety exactly, however, individuals who are predisposed to anxiety are likely to suffer from an anxiety disorder at some time in their life, as well as individuals who experience a traumatic event. An unbalance in the brain as well as drug use, including prescription medication, can also be a cause of anxiety. If you have developed anxiety or an anxiety-related disorder as an adult, it may have been caused due to an underlying medical condition.

Neurofeedback Therapy and Brain Mapping for Treating Anxiety

During neurofeedback sessions, our systems are set to certain target brain wave ranges. Your brain will be analyzed and through brain mapping, your individual brain waves will be monitored.  Whenever your brain reached the targets you’ll be rewarded; this will occur every half second. This means that in 20 sessions your brain will get 72,000 chances to self-regulate into the target brain wave ranges. Repetitive exercise is the key to reshaping how your brain works.

According to various scientific studies, the left front part of your brain is more active when you’re in a positive mood, while the right frontal side is more active when you’re in a poor mood. There have been three irrefutable, controlled studies where scientists utilized neurofeedback to retrain the brain of college students to be more active on the front left side instead of right. In one of the aforementioned studies, the subject’s patterns of thinking also changed. That is how neurofeedback therapy for depression works, by “retraining” your brain to be more active on the front left side. The brain waves that generate negative thoughts are replaced with brain waves that result in positive thinking patterns. There have also been a lot of studies completed on adults suffering from anxiety. These studies have shown that neurofeedback therapy helped minimize negative and feelings of hopelessness.

While medication and psychotherapy can often help anxiety-ridden patients, they only provide temporary relief. Neurofeedback therapy, on the other hand, helps reshape your thinking patterns. This reshaping of your thinking patterns can help you seek permanent relief from anxiety. That isn’t to say you won’t get sad when something upsetting happens, but you’ll no longer be plagued with anxiety-inducing thoughts. You can even opt to do multiple treatments at once to promote a change in your brain.
