What is a Trigger Point Injection?

Your favorite Denver chiropractic office uses trigger point injections to get to the root of pain in patients. The injection itself is a procedure that involves trigger points in a sore muscle. These trigger points often feel like knots in the muscles, and they irritate nerves and cause pain. In order to deal with trigger points, here at Summit Medical Care Center, we use trigger point injections. The injection contains saline or a local anesthetic, along with a possible corticosteroid. This combination is used to reduce the swelling of the trigger point along the nerves in your muscle. It is an ideal way to relieve muscle pain.

What are the Possible Side Effects Associated with Trigger Point Injections?

As with any treatment, there are some side effects. For the injection itself, there is not typically anything to be concerned with as this is an outpatient procedure that takes only minutes. However, if you are allergic to a drug that we usually use in trigger point injections, we will need to know this in order to alter our approach. Side effects occur in fewer than 5 percent of patients overall. These can include injection site pain, worsening of muscle pain, or muscle spasms in the neck and/or shoulders. If you do have any side effects these will disappear within the first 1 to 3 days following the trigger point injections. However, make sure to contact us at Summit Medical Care Center if you have any questions regarding side effects associated with trigger point injections.
