Supartz vs. Hyalgan vs. Synvisc vs. Orthovisc : What's the Difference?

Supartz vs. Hyalgan vs. Synvisc vs. Orthovisc: What's the Difference?

Summit Medical Care Center in Broomfield, CO offers a wide range of treatment options to treat both acute and chronic pain including osteoarthritis. You may have heard a great deal about a number of different options for treatment. But, it can be confusing and difficult to know the differences. A key question we get is understanding the difference between Supartz vs. Hyalgan vs. Synvisc vs. Orthovisc. Which one is right for you? The only way to know for sure is to come into our offices for a consultation. However, these options need to be considered carefully.Man with knee pain in need of injections from a Broomfield, CO chiropractor

What they all have in common is the ability to reduce knee pain and inflammation that is brought on by osteoarthritis and other conditions. Now, take a look at what these options offer individually.

Supartz:

Supartz is a type of viscosupplement. It is generally given to the patient as a three or five dose injection. In some situations, the three-dose injection can provide pain relief from the pain you feel for up to six months. This treatment option does have some side effects including pain at the injection point and effusion (swelling of your joint). It can also cause some bruising in some people. It is highly effective though, and long-term dosing can provide pain relief extensively.

Hyalgan:

Hyalgan is the go-to option for many people because it is one of the most commonly used. It was the first type of viscosupplement approved by the FDA (back in 1997). It is given in a series of injections – generally five injections – at a rate of one per week. It works to reduce pain right away, though it will improve over time. The most common side effect is a pain at the injection site as well as some swelling of the joint. It can cause itching and headaches in some people.

Synvisc:

For those who simply hate injections, this may be the right option. Synvisc is a onetime dose injection. It is the only option for a single dose. It can provide relief up to six months and relief occurs shortly after the injection occurs. It can cause some swelling around the joint initially and stiffness in the joint is also common.

Orthovisc:

Orthovisc is a bit different. It is derived from bacterial cells (which is unlike most other viscosupplements that are rooster comb-based). For those who have allergies to birds and chickens, feathers, or eggs, Orthovisc is a solution. It is given over three to four doses. It can cause some swelling around the joint, rashes and bruising.
