Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback, is a type of biofeedback that uses real-time displays of brain activity, to teach self-regulation of brain function.

Neurofeedback is a training by which the brain learns to function more efficiently.  It is a gradual learning process and applies to any aspect of brain function that can be measured.  Self-regulation is a necessary part of healthy brain function. Self-regulation training allows the central nervous system to function better.

Brain Dysregulation
Neurofeedback addresses the problems of brain dysregulation.  Dysregulation includes anxiety-depression spectrum, attention deficits, behavior disorders, some sleep disorders, headaches, migraines, PMS and emotional disturbances.  Neurofeedback can help the brain learn how to respond to stressors and triggers differently to repair the dysfunction.

Neurofeedback is also useful for organic brain conditions such as seizures, autism spectrum behaviors, cerebral palsy and autoimmune disorders.

Post Concussion Protocol
An area of particular concern with closed head injury is youth sports.  Some, but not all, schools require baseline cognitive testing for boys and girls in sports such as football, baseball, track, soccer, lacrosse and rugby.   With a baseline test, once a head injury occurs, a second test should be done and can direct treatment to return to baseline.

Neurofeedback is fairly new to the youth sports community, and is being utilized more frequently for baseline testing and injury recovery.

Here are some statistics on why is is so important in youth sports:

  • High school athletes suffer 2 million injures, 500,000 doctor visits and 30,000 hospitalizations each year
  • 1 out of every15.8% of football players who sustain a concussion severe enough to cause loss of consciousness return to play the same day.
  • Concussion rates for children under the age of 19 who play in football have doubled in the last decade, even though overall sports participation has declined.
  • More than 248,000 children visited hospital emergency departments in 2009 for concussions and other traumatic brain injuries related to sports and recreation.
  • 5-10% of athletes will experience a concussion in any given sport season.
  • Retired NFL players in their 50s are five times more likely to have been diagnosed with a dementia-related syndrome
  • The percentage of collegiate athletes who have a history of multiple concussions before playing their first college game: 36%.
  • It is important to manage concussions early because the frontal lobe continues to develop until the age of 25.
  • Current CDC estimates reveal that up to 3.8 million concussions occur every year
