Basal Metabolic Rate Test

Why Test for Basal Metabolic Rate?

Every person has a different basal metabolic rate due to age, gender, body composition and health status. Knowing your BMR can determine how many calories you need to maintain your weight, lose weight or gain weight. Finding your BMR can also indicate whether or not you have a disease or medical condition that is affecting your metabolism -- problems with your thyroid, diabetes, heart disease, COPD or obesity -- all factors that can cause metabolic syndrome.

The Process of the Basal Metabolic Rate Test

The fact that the calorie burn rate and the amount of oxygen consumed are interchangeable is the basis for the basal metabolic rate test. To burn 1 calorie, 208.06 milliliters of oxygen are needed. During the test, the amount of oxygen your body uses and the carbon dioxide it produces are measured. You breathe into the machine, while sitting in a reclined, relaxed position.

Basal Metabolic Rate Test Results

Once you know your basal metabolic rate, you can devise a plan specifically for your weight loss, maintenance or weight gain goals through diet and exercise. You and your health professional can also learn if certain medications are affecting your metabolism. Metabolism changes over time so it is a good idea to stay up to date on your BMR by getting it tested.
